Handmade, antique and contemporary art pottery was typically intended to be art objects and not always designed for functional use.  Many glazes on antique pottery such as Roseville, Rookwood, Weller, Van Briggle, Teco, Marblehead, Newcomb, Grueby and contemporary makers such as Ephraim, Door, Jemerick, and Freiwald are porous and not designed to hold water for long periods of time.

If collectors desire to display live flowers in art pottery vases, we generally recommend using a plastic liner or glass insert to protect your art pottery investment.  The use of a liner or glass insert will prevent leaks which could not only damage the pottery but also damage any wood furniture the vase may be displayed on.
