Martin Rettig (1882-1885)

Martin Rettig was born in 1869, and was trained as a painter. Rettig studied with Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy, and later was considered to be an authority on the works of the master. He was one of the first decorators at Rookwood Pottery, from 1882 through 1885.

He worked primarily in Limoges with a Japanesque style typical of Rookwood at the time. Rettig was the president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918 through 1920. He passed away in 1956 leaving a large body of floral oil paintings as his legacy. Collector interest in his work is considered to be average.
