Studio pottery is typically considered to be pottery produced by individual craftsmen or small studios that produced limited quantity, handcrafted art pottery. Grueby pottery is typically thought of as the earliest studio pottery. By the 1920’s, due primarily to economic reasons, most American art pottery being produced was of standardized forms and shapes. However, during this time period, and even today, there remains a very limited amount of handcrafted, decorated studio pottery being produced in the United States. In return to the small studio days of Grueby and Marblehead, these studio pottery makers are sacrificing production numbers to maintain artistic originality and hand craftsmanship in their art pottery
