The Old Money Aesthetic That’s The Newest (Old) Trend

4 minute read

There’s a new home decor aesthetic trend I’m starting to see popping up everywhere. If you’re not into the minimalist, modern farmhouse, or any other decor trends of late, perhaps the Old Money aesthetic is for you!

What is the Old Money Home Decor Aesthetic?

If you’re wondering what an Old Money decor scheme looks like, close your eyes. Picture any old mansion you’ve seen on tv or in the movies. The Crown works perfectly here, but so does Scooby-Doo! What is the decor usually like? Layers and layers of stuff, right? The reason it’s called Old Money decor is that you’re sort of emulating generational wealth that has built up in a home over time. An uncle’s giant portrait, a tapestry passed down from great-great-Grandpa, rugs on rugs on rugs. In an “Old Money” sitting room, you’re surrounded by antiques, collectibles, and heirlooms. There are no “Live-Laugh-Love” signs on the wall, and surfaces are covered with genuine, authentic, vintage items like ceramic flower vases instead of new, mass-made Pottery Barn decor.

How to Decorate in the Old Money Style?

The great thing about the Old Money aesthetic is that you don’t have to actually be an heir to a fortune to create the same vibe in your space.

Do you love to read? Look for books with beautiful leather or fabric covers, or check out a local antique shop for genuinely old tomes. You can display them on a wooden bookshelf or, if you lack space, use invisible shelves on your wall for a few books in various places.

Add wall sconces for ambient light. Speaking of light, ditch the college lamp and go for something like a Tiffany-style or pottery table lamp.

Use warm colors to create that homey, amber-hued, cozy glow, or go cooler with blues and silver or gold accents.

A comfy armchair with a stack of books and a decorative area rug is a great way to start an “Old Money” style nook in your room.

Buy Vintage for Authenticity

Since the “Old Money” aesthetic is about heirlooms and old things, start your sourcing at thrift shops, estate sales, and vintage shops. Finding a vintage seller that specializes in the type of item you’re looking for is perfect because you can search by aesthetic but also learn a bit about the artwork, pottery, tapestry, etc., that catches your eye.  Not only is this the best way to find authentic-looking pieces of decor, but it’s a much more sustainable, intentional way to decorate.

Vintage Art Pottery for “Old Money” Aesthetic Decor

One way to incorporate this trend in your home is by investing in vintage art pottery. Art pottery is pottery that is created for decorative purposes rather than simply functional use. It has a long history, with many iconic pieces originating in the early 20th century when the Arts and Crafts movement was at its peak.

Vintage art pottery has a unique charm and elegance that perfectly fits the Old Money aesthetic. Pieces from famous art pottery makers like Roseville, McCoy, and Rookwood are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. They are often decorated with intricate designs, such as floral motifs, and finished in rich, deep colors that add a touch of luxury to any space.

Adding vintage art pottery to your home can create a sense of history and tradition, an essential element of the Old Money aesthetic. These pieces have stood the test of time and have been admired by generations, making them a valuable addition to any collection.

When it comes to incorporating vintage art pottery into your home, there are several ways to do it. You could display a pottery collection on a bookshelf or mantel or use individual pieces as statement pieces in a room. You could also use a vintage pottery flower vase for fresh or dried flowers, adding a touch of natural beauty to your space.
